  Royal Albatross

To sight a soaring Albatross is unforgettable.

With a wingspan of up to 3 metres (9'6") it is truly impressive

At the only mainland breeding colony of albatross in the world you'll find the social and family life of the breeding colony fascinating.

The Royal Albatross Centre is situated next to the breeding colony at Taiaroa Head at the tip of the Otago Peninsula.
Visitors to the Centre can view interpretative wildlife and historical displays.

A comfortable cafe allows for views of flying albatross.

Guided Tours combine a presentation of the life of the albatross with a visit to the nature reserve viewing area.

Tours run on the half hour during summer, hourly in winter. Tours do not run on Tuesday mornings or between 17 Sept - 24 Nov. when the birds are breeding.

Prior bookings are essential

Underneath the peace of the nature reserve lie the tunnels of Fort Taiaroa, established over 100 years ago to counter the threat of invasion from Tsarist Russia.

A guided half hour tour show the Fort and the newly restored 1886 Armstrong disappearing gun.
