Highland Peaks

  Penguins

Penguins are perhaps the most human-like of all birds.

The world's rarest penguin, the captivating yellow-eyed penguin, has its largest mainland colony on the Otago Peninsula.

Little Blue Penguins, world's smallest penguin, also nest on the Peninsula.

During their breeding season, the penguins can be readily seen as they come ashore every evening and waddle up the beach to their nest sites, sometimes as far as one kilometre inland.

to prevent them overheating

while on land.
